You might want to find a good book on cryptography.

Shortly, the certificate verification is based on the verification
of the previous certificate in the chain until one finds a "trusted"
certificate. The errors you are getting indicate that xmlsec/openssl
can not build the certificate chain and find a "trusted" cert.
